THE HISTORY
Gubbio hosts from 46 consecutive years a "classic" one race among the most prestigious Italian hill-climb competition. The location in the enchanting city of Gubbio well with summer placement of the race, which offers a winning joint between motor sports and holidays.
It was in 1966 when a handful of Gubbio's enthusiasts led by Balducci and Ghigi in collaboration with Walter Berardi, historical "father" of all the Umbrians characters related to motor sport, organized the first edition of the hillclimb, on a road stretch from the Gubbio gates until the town of Mengara. A path that recalled the famous at the time,"Coppa della Mengara" which was played in the '30s from the outskirts of Perugia to Gubbio and that saw starring Luigi Fagioli.
Natural desire to link immediately to the name of the event that the great driver from Marche origin but in adoption of Gubbio, the creator of epic undertakings in Formula 1 so, as in some endurance races.
More often called "golden age" of motor racing, the '60s lived the dominance of road races on racetracks. Many Formula 1 Grand Prix is still disputed on motorways and many drivers of the top division has also dabbled in classical Endurance as in some hill climbs.
The Trofeo Fagioli was born then under a "lucky star" and the first edition saw the triumph of the Ferrari GTO of Clemente Ravetto, former Jaguar official driver in some editions of the legendary Targa Florio.
Since 1968 the race was moved to the SS 298, the stretch that leads from Gubbio to the Madonna della Cima pass keeping the connotation that with slight modifications, has kept up to date and since then taking the double name "Trofeo Luigi Fagioli - Gubbio/Madonna della Cima".
Besides Clemente Ravetto, the winners list of the race includes other great champions of yesterday and today.
Simone Faggioli is on ranking top of first goal to the Madonna della Cima finish line with 8 wins, addition to holding the track record with a time of 1'36"10 (2012)
In second place of this Trofeo Luigi Fagioli "absolute ranking of" is Gianni Varese, with 4 consecutive wins obtained from 1977 to 1980. Mario Caliceti closes the Gold podium with 3 wins dated 1983, 1985 and 1990.
